#FiveonFriday: Interview with Art Therapist, Lily Leiber, MPS, ATR-BC, LCAT

Vision Board by Lily Leiber
Feeling inspired by the Art Fairs taking place in NYC this week, it's apropos that this month's #FiveonFriday highlights a woman who marries BOTH art and wellness in her career as an Art Therapist.

Lily Leiber, MPS, ATR-BC, LCAT, requested to be put in the Q&A HOT SEAT and I think you'll relish her responses... Not only is Lily, a half-lifer friend, {yeah, made that up... meaning I've known her half my life}, she's a passionate and talented therapist.

What the heck do ALL those letters after her name mean?! Lily is a Nationally Board Certified (BC), Registered Art Therapist (ATR) and New York State Licensed Art Therapist (LCAT).

And now for a lil #FiveonFriday Q&A with the Art Therapist Aficionado DuJour....

1. What is your favorite quote?

I love collecting inspirational quotes so this is a tough one for me! I put quotes and pictures up for inspiration and have several on-going lists on my computer. That said, in this exact moment in time, I’ll pick this one:

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Henry David Thoreau

2. What are your TOP 5 favorite things in your life right now?

1) My loving community of family and friends that inspire, challenge, and support me.
2) My work. I am so blessed to be able to make a living using my talents and skill set to help people live their lives to the fullest.
3) Living in a city where everything is at your fingertips: museums, concerts, ice skating rinks, parks, the corner deli… NYC is truly the city that never sleeps.
4) Being around cats and dogs and second to that, well, I’ll admit it: I have a warm place in my heart for cute animal videos…they always make me laugh and smile and I can just feel any stress from the day melt away…
5) Karaoke. Need I say more?

Oh, and avocados. The miracle fruit.

3. Who are your mentors?

Mother Teresa is an inspiration to me. She dedicated her life to bettering the lives of others. What higher calling can you have?

4. What is NEW + GOOD in your life?

What’s new?
I’ve started offering these relax and renew creative art based workshops at Tournesol Wellness in Murray Hill. The workshops are designed to use creative visualizations and creativity to soothe the soul and release stress. Each workshop is tailored to specific themes: finding stress-reduction techniques, visualizing your dreams and defining the steps you can take to actualize them…. The workshops have been creative, rejuvenating, relaxing, and most of all fun!

Meditation & Mandala Workshop
What’s good? Countless things. My loving husband who never fails to make me laugh, my clients who courageously face obstacles head on and overcome them through work and support, my circle of friends… the list is infinite. I frequently write down one highlight from each day to maintain an attitude of gratitude. I’ll leave you with this highlight: recently during a snow storm, I sat watching a fire burn while sipping a cup of hot tea. Peace encapsulated in time.

5. What advice would you give to all your fans out there?

Accept yourself as you are right now in this present moment, imperfections and all. Every day you may make a mistake for the rest of your life and that’s okay as long as you learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward. Mistakes are what make us human. There never was and there never will be anyone exactly like you. Accept yourself, love yourself, and dare to be the best version of yourself you can be.

Art Therapist

Lily Leiber's Official Bio

Lily receives great satisfaction helping children, adolescents, and families improve mood and relationships so that they can experience more joy and fulfillment in their lives. She empowers people to overcome issues through verbal psychotherapy and suggests art making to deepen understanding and expression. In her work with children and adolescents, Lily frequently emphasizes art making as it can provide a non-threatening, creative way to address issues that clients may be reluctant or unable to verbalize and serve as a starting point for discussion. Through art and verbal psychotherapy, young clients can heal trauma, and improve self-esteem, attention, social skills, and sensory regulation.

Additionally, she has years of experience providing psychotherapy and art therapy treatment to children, adolescents, and families in inpatient psychiatric hospital and outpatient school settings. Lily holds a Masters in Creative Arts Therapy from Pratt Institute where she was awarded The Pratt Institute Circle Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

Lily is genuine, respectful, and curious. She stays abreast of current trends and research through participating in trainings and workshops around overcoming trauma, increasing child resiliency, and improving parent-child relationships. Lily focuses on each person as a whole using a strength-based, relational approach. She collaborates with children, adolescents, and families to resolve problems, heal pain, and through a meaningful process close the gap between where they are right now and where they would like to be.
