RECAP: Integrative Nutrition Conference May 2014 {featuring Dr. Oz, Keri Glassman, Dr. Hyman, Nitika Chopra, Chef Pete Evans & MORE!}

I am still digesting all of the IINformation and IINspiration I received last weekend at the Integrative Nutrition Conference, but I want to share what I have learned with you guys, so you can reap the benefits of my experience...

BUT there is something we CAN do about it. Take control of YOUR HEALTH! Inform yourself. Empower yourself. Practice preventative care.



First speaker of the day was Keri Glassman, Founder, Nutritious Life, and a woman whom I admire. Her holistic approach to health and belief in NOT COUNTING CALORIES is my belief and practice too. She has a system that that she uses, called:

8 Pillars of a Nutritious Life

1. Drink Up

Research shows that obese people who drank 2 cups of water before each meal over 3 months lost 5lbs more than those who didn't.

2. Sleep Deep

Research shows that the risk of obesity rises 23% with 6 hours, 50% with 5 hours, and 73% with only 4 hours.

3. Exercise Steady
Find an exercise you enjoy doing and do it!

4. Stress Less
We are in a chronic state of stress. Find ways to reduce it in your life.

5. Eat Empowered

When you focus on how good you feel when you fuel yourself with healthy foods, you continue to feel motivated to eat. them. Makes sense, right?

6. Live Consciously
Improve your work & home environments:
~ Clean & Organized etc.

7. Love More

Up to 30% of people who struggle with weight also report problems with sex drive. Sex can help you lose weight. Research shows that the average person burns approximately 200 calories during 30 minutes of sex.

8. Nurture Yourself

Take time for yourself! If you don't, you won't be able to take care of anyone else.

Next up was one of my FAVORITE teachers from my IIN schooling, Functional Medicine authority, Dr. Mark Hyman, Founder, The UltraWellness Center, and New York Times #1 bestselling author of The Blood Sugar Solution, (and 7 more books). FUN FACT: He is IIN Founder Joshua Rosenthal's personal doc. His hypothesis as to why we are SO FAT is: Obesity is NOT driven by calories, but by dietary composition. He says that calorie restriction as a vehicle for weight loss does not work.

I can't hardly wait to check out the NEW FOOD FLICK he produced with Katie Couric => Fed UP, (FU for short), about the food companies' propaganda in the U.S. of A. Watch the trailer:





Are you addicted to sugar? {I know I've dealt with a sugar addiction since I was a child - My name is Tatiana and I am a chocoholic.} Did you know that sugar is 8X as addictive as cocaine?! 

Whenever I hear Dr. Hyman speak, I always learn a NEW word, and as a logophile, (word lover), I was psyched to learn the word => TOFI = Thin on the Outside, Fat on the Inside.

Just as I was starting to go into an afternoon slump, Rubin Naiman, PhD, Sleep and Dream Specialist at University of Arizona's Center for Integrative Medicine took the stage. {Fortunately I snuck some roasted sesame seeds and water in for a snack to revive me} Sleep Disorders are the #1 health problem in the U.S. I would never have guessed that, would you?

Did your momma give your warm milk to help you fall asleep as a wee child? Dr. Naiman debunked this myth and some others.

Sleep Remedy Myths
:

1) Midnight Snacks
2) Night Cap {Alcohol} - actually makes it harder to have a restful sleep.
3) Sleepy Teas or what he likes to call Pee Pee Teas Lol



Dark Cherries
If you're having trouble falling asleep, your body needs more MELATONIN (MT)! Melatonin is really important as it communicates with the brain that it is dark outside. Instead of going for a sleeping pill, try getting it from a natural food source like organic dark cherries (or cherry juice - NO sugar). Great minds think alike, I mentioned these bad boys on my my Feel Better Tomorrow TV segment. Make sure you eat, or drink, the cherries at least 2 hours before bedtime to allow your body to assimilate.

Next up was Nitika Chopra, Founder, Bella Life, (no relation to Deepak Chopra), shared her moving health journey with us. Having suffered from Psoriatic Arthritis since she was 10 years old, making it unbearable for her to walk down stairs or even make breakfast, because her joints were SO inflamed, it wasn't until her late-twenties that she found the tools to heal herself and follow her dream of creating Bella Life and becoming a Talk Show Host of Naturally Beautiful!

Amateur Vs. Pro - Who are YOU?

5. Everything Is Figuroutable
Your beliefs drive your behavior.
Ask for help: prayer, meditation, friends, family, Google...

The HIGHLIGHT of the conference for me was Dr. Oz! I hadn't seen him in person since I played footsie with him on The Dr. Oz Show. His talk was all-encompassing and began by talking about what holds us back: time, $, knowledge, and most of all fear of change (which is really a fear of love and that's soul death). How can we change though?

How To Make A Change:
1. Feelings change minds more than facts.
2. Make it easy to do the right thing.
3. Adore your solutions.
4. Live the good life.


Makes sense to me.

He also gave use tips on...


How to be a Smart Patient:
1. Know your Medical History.
2. Always get a 2nd Opinion.
3. Find an Advocate.
4. Have a health question? Ask the FREE MDApp. {Dr. Oz created this app with a $50 million investment from the U.S. Gov.}

How can we ALL be healthier? Well, we need to make these


5 Life Adjustments:
1. Blood Pressure (ideal 115/75)
2. Exercise - 30 mins daily (walking counts!)
3. Healthy Diet that's easy to love
4. Stress Control & Sleep
5. Curtail Addictions (Alcohol, Drugs, Sugar etc.)

Celeb Aussie Chef Pete Evans
Chef Pete Evans and Dr. Oz have something in common - they both like to soak their nuts... If you're laughing, you, (and I), have dirty minds... Of course, they both appreciate the digestive benefits they reap from soaking their nuts, (to clarify, fruits composed of a hard shell and seed), in water overnight. Pete is a celebrity Australian chef, author, and TV host, who is using his HUGE platform to spread the message of healthy living. Like many health advocate, he used to be heavier and less healthy. Now he's one healthy HOTTIE! Ladies, are you with me?!


 The Daily Love

My man Mastin Kipp, Founder, The Daily Love and guest on Oprah's OWN show Super Soul Sunday, preached right TO ME when he said:

Closing up the conference was Dr. Daphne Miller, Founder, WholefamilyMD and author of Farmacology and The Jungle Effect. Her approach to medicine is that opportunities for health and healing are found not only in the medical system, but in unexpected places like home kitchens, school gardens, community organizations, spiritual centers, farms, and nature trails.

She made a KEY POINT about the difference between CONVENTIONAL, ORGANIC, and PATURE EGGS. Which one do you think you should be eating for your BEST HEALTH? If you answered PASTURE EGGS, BINGO, you're righto!
