According to the Huffington Post, the recent listeria outbreak in cantaloupe has been noted as the deadliest outbreak of food-related illness in over 10 years in the U.S.! At least 16 deaths and 72 illnesses have been caused by the listeria infection from Jensen Farms cantaloupes. Listeria is a bacterium that causes Listeriosis, affecting mainly pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and adults with impaired immune systems.
If you develop a listeria infection, you may experience the following symptoms:
- Muscle Aches
Keep in mind that symptoms could take as long as two months before the first signs of the infection start. Should the infection spread to your nervous system, you may experience these symptoms:
- Stiff Neck
- Loss of Balance
